Run the 70-minute AI ethics policy lab for 11 students, including timed reveals, Claude critique, cross-group defense, and report handoff.

Teaching outcome

Students should leave able to translate broad ethical principles into a defensible college AI policy, evaluate rather than copy AI criticism, and identify evidence that learning occurred.

Do not grade the pre-AI snapshot. The final report may be graded, but no preferred verdict earns points.

Before class

  • Post the student-page link in eCampus.
  • Confirm every student can access an individual university-sponsored Claude account in a browser.
  • Print three copies of the fallback critique card below.
  • Assign groups A, B, and C with 4, 4, and 3 students.
  • Test browser local storage, backup download, restore, report preview, and Print / Save as PDF.
  • Tell students that names and answers remain local until they export a file.

Anchor case

A student submits polished AI-assisted work under a vague responsible-use rule, discloses only "AI helped," and cannot defend two claims.

Do not ask: Did the student cheat?

Ask: What evidence is missing before judgment?

Variation 1: access

The student used a stronger paid model. A classmate avoided AI, spent twice as long, and received a lower grade.

Force the distinction: unequal tool access versus unequal effort.

Variation 2: privacy

The student uploaded instructor feedback, a peer draft, and unpublished course materials to an unapproved service.

Require: prohibited material, consent boundary, approved process, and incident response.

Variation 3: accountability

The syllabus never defined responsible use or adequate disclosure. The student can now defend most, but not all, of the report.

Require: shared responsibility without erasing student agency.

In the three-person group, combine evidence keeper and spokesperson.

Claude stage

Students may open Claude only after the individual snapshot and group brainstorm. Every group uses the same prompt generated by the page.

Stop students from outsourcing the decision

  • Claude attacks one provisional policy; it does not write a replacement.
  • Students must accept one suggestion, reject one, and document verification.
  • Claude output is not evidence about any paper.
  • Names, identifiers, grades, feedback, peer work, and course files stay out of the prompt.
  • Close Claude before the final defense.

Fallback critique card

Your policy may reward polished disclosure rather than learning. It may assume equal tool access, treat consent as sufficient privacy protection, and place duties on students without requiring instructors or the institution to provide usable rules.

Task: Identify the strongest criticism, reject at least one criticism that does not fit, and revise exactly one policy sentence.

Cross-group challenge

Give each challenger one counterexample. The defending group has 60 seconds to preserve or revise one policy sentence.

A multilingual student uses AI to translate their own argument. The policy classifies all generated wording as prohibited. Does the rule preserve fairness and learning?

Counterexample B

A student uses an approved model but pastes peer feedback without permission. Does approved-tool status settle the privacy question?

Counterexample C

A student discloses every prompt but cannot verify a central claim. Is transparency sufficient evidence of learning?

Counterexample D

A student refuses AI for ethical reasons. The assignment rewards ambitious AI-enabled scope. What comparable path must the policy provide?

Misconceptions to challenge

Three-day report handoff

  1. Each evidence keeper shares the group packet with group members.
  2. Each student imports the packet into their own browser session without replacing the baseline.
  3. Students download a full session backup before leaving class.
  4. Students complete the individual reflection and apply one accurate idea from each paper.
  5. Students inspect the full HTML report preview, print or save it as PDF, and submit that PDF to eCampus.

The pre-AI snapshot is ungraded. Grade the report's reasoning, revision, specificity, source use, and evaluation of AI advice.

Before students leave

  • Every individual baseline shows a snapshot time.
  • Every group has a complete group packet.
  • Every student has downloaded a full session backup.
  • Students know that local browser data can be lost.
  • Students know the PDF is due in eCampus within three days.
  • Students know that changing a verdict is not penalized.
